Coming To Stone Church Arts: "Old World/New World: Timeless Sonatas" with Leslie Stroud and Matthew Odell

BELLOWS FALLS: On Saturday, November 3 at 7:30 pm, Stone Church Arts and Cameo Arts Foundation presents a benefit concert. Leslie Stroud, flute, and Matthew Odell, piano, share favorite sonatas demonstrating the intriguing intersection of old and new relationships—culturally, geographically and musically. The concert takes place at Immanuel Episcopal Church, the stone church on the hill, in Bellows Falls.

100% of the donations received goes to the Greater Falls Warming Shelter. The mission of the Warming Shelter is to provide a safe, warm overnight shelter during the winter months for those in need. The shelter principally serves towns in the Greater Falls area, including Rockingham, Westminster, Athens, Grafton, North Walpole and Walpole, New Hampshire. The Shelter is open every night during the winter season (November to April) from 7 pm to 7 am.

Stroud and Odell perform works by three living composers representing several of our oldest New World cites, Boston, Philadelphia and New York City, alongside one of our most beloved and influential Old World composers, Gabriel Fauré. This diverse collection of sonatas spans a period of 192 years, taking the listener on a journey through time and place.

Regularly performing together throughout New England, Leslie and Matthew’s performances together include at the Opera House at Booth Bay Harbor, Pentangle Arts Classical Series, Dartmouth College, ArtisTreeCommunity Arts Center and Gallery, Frederick Historic Piano Collection (Ashburnham, MA), the Eliot Church of South Natick (Boston), Plymouth State University, Music at the Meetinghouse, St. Gaudens National Historic Site summer concert series, and in residence as Tomlinson Fellows at Tabor Academy.

Sharing a commitment and delight in music reflecting our time and cultures, Leslie and Matthew often pair new works with the treasured classics that gave birth to new musical ideas and idioms. Having met through a mutual colleague, Leslie and Matthew immediately took to performing works ranging from Bach to Boulez and everything in between.

Leslie and Matthew are excited to be recording for Centaur Records their first album together, selected Sonatas for flute and piano by New York City composer Gary Schocker (www.garyschocker.com), with whom they have been working directly on this project. Premier recordings of the included Sonatas, these wonderful, urbane, witty, and profoundly touching works are true gems of the flute and piano duo repertory. The brand new Sonata No. 9, receiving its New England premiers by the duo, will also be included. ‘To Say Goodbye,’ written for Leslie and Matthew in 2017 and premiered by them at Dartmouth College, is the encore piece to the album.

Old World/New World with Leslie Stroud, flute, and Matthew Odell, piano, is presented in partnership with Cameo Arts Foundation, Inc.
